Quote of the Week – May 26
Nervous systems are possessed by individuals; but there is no nervous system of the crowd.
This 1924 quote was from a social psychology lecture I had in third year and was by psychologist Floyd H. Allport. Allport was discussing how one can analyze why certain people act the way they do studying groups of people is just an aggregation of this. He felt our behaviours when amongst others were the result of our individual personalities interacting with eachother – not some new “group psyche”.
