Quote of the week – Mar 29

If you hear hoofbeats look for a horse, not a zebra.

This week’s quote of the week comes from the always candid Dr. Ray Fowler. Dr. Fowler is an associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Texas, Chief of Operations for the Dallas Metro EMS system (BioTel), and an attending emergency physician at Parkland Memorial hospital. Dr. Fowler also maintains a website with PDFs and PPTs of some of his lectures.

This particular quote comes from a lecture on the basics of medical education and is actually credited to Dr. Fowler’s father, the late A.A. Fowler, Jr. Ray takes a very frank and unpolitical look at contemporary EMS issues and he often references his father’s no B/S attitude. I encourage you to check out a few of his lectures on issues such as EMS capnography, the difference between BLS and ALS and, my personal favourites, EKG usage in the prehospital field.
